Mahagathbandhan Faces Crushing Defeat

Mahagathbandhan's hopes of a comeback in Bihar took a nosedive, as the BJP-JD(U)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) retained power with a landslide mandate. The coalition has won 202 out of the 243 seats.

The Mahagathbandhan, on the other hand, has been restricted to only 35 seats. This marks a dramatic fall from the 2020 election, when the opposition alliance had won 114 seats.

The extent of the RJD’s setback is particularly stark. The party has won only 25 seats, which is only a third as compared to the 75 seats it won in 2020.

The Congress, too, has delivered one of its weakest performances in the state. Contesting 61 seats this time, the party won only six. Its performance had been poorer than 2020, when it won 19 of the 70 seats allotted to it.

Bihar Result 'Surprising', Election Not Fair From Beginning: Rahul Gandhi

"I express my heartfelt gratitude to those millions of voters in Bihar who expressed their trust in the Mahagathbandhan. This result in Bihar is truly surprising. We could not achieve victory in an election that was not fair from the very beginning," Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said.

"This fight is for the protection of the Constitution and democracy. The Congress party and the INDIA alliance will deeply review this result and make their efforts to save democracy even more effective," he added.

Bihar Election Results LIVE: AIMIM Sweeps Seemanchal Again; Tally Neck-And-Neck With Congress

Telangana-based All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen or AIMIM has exceeded expectations in Bihar legislative assembly elections after bagging five seats in the Seemanchal region of the state.

In 2020 elections as well, the party had won five seats. After their 2020 victory, four out of the five elected MLAs had defected to the Rashtriya Janata Dal. Only state President of the party, Akhtarul Iman stayed in AIMIM. However, none of the sitting MLAs were given tickets by the RJD.

These consecutive victories in the Seemanchal region for a party, that hails from Hyderabad and is essentially alien to much of the Hindi heartland, signify its appeal to the local Muslim population.

The Election Commission officially declared AIMIM as victorious in five constituencies, which is almost neck-and-neck with the tally of Congress, which has won five seats and is ahead in another.

Bihar Election Result 2025 Live: Voters Support Voter List Purification, Says PM Modi

"The Bihar elections have proven another thing. Now, the country's voters, especially our young voters, take voter list purification very seriously. The youth of Bihar have also overwhelmingly supported voter list purification. And I believe that for the sanctity of democracy, every voter has their importance and rights," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said.

"Now, it is the responsibility of every party to activate their parties at the polling booths and enthusiastically participate in the voter list purification work. Contribute 100%, so that voter lists can be fully purified in other places as well," he added.

Bihar Election Result 2025 Live: Public Trust In EC Has Strengthened, Says PM Modi

The public trust in the Election Commission of India has strengthened following the successful conduct of the Bihar assembly elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said.

"The consistently high voter turnout over the past few years, the increased turnout by the deprived and the exploited, is a significant achievement for the Election Commission. This is the same Bihar that was once dominated by Maoist terror. Voting used to end at 3 pm in Naxal-affected areas. But in this election, people in Bihar have voted without fear, with enthusiasm and excitement," he said.

"You also know what used to happen in Bihar during the times of jungle raj. Violence used to occur openly at polling stations. Ballot boxes were looted. Today, the same Bihar is seeing record voter turnout. It is voting peacefully. Everyone's vote has been recorded. Everyone has cast their vote as per their choice," he added.

Bihar Election Result 2025 Live: PM Modi Credits Win To NDA's 'New MY Factor', Jabs Opposition's 'Appeasement'

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has credited the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) victory in Bihar to the "new MY factor", which he described as "Mahila (women) and Yuva (youth) factor". This differs from the Opposition's "MY factor", which was aimed at "appeasement", he added.

Modi was apparently referring to the "Muslim-Yadav combination", which analysts have credited for the RJD's strong hold in Bihar in the past.

"Some parties in Bihar had created the appeasement formula of MY. But today's victory has given a new positive MY formula, and that is Mahila and Youth. Today, Bihar is among those states of the country which have the highest number of youth, and this includes youth from every religion and every caste. Their desire, their aspiration and their dreams have completely destroyed the old communal MY formula of the Jungle Raj people," he said, while speaking in New Delhi.

Bihar Election Results 2025 LIVE: NDA Wins Maharashtra-Like Mandate

Bihar has seen a repeat of Maharashtra, as much to the shock of pollsters, the ruling National Democratic Alliance has totally annihilated the Opposition. While the NDA win was on the cards, none of the pre- or post-election surveys projected the coalition to win around 200 of the 243 seats.

So, what connects the NDA's tsunami-like mandate in Bihar with its historic victory in Maharashtra last year? The answer, say analysts, primarily lies in the direct-benefit-transfer (DBT) schemes that connect with women voters.
