Mumbai Rains Highlights: IMD Issues Orange Alert For Mumbai, Thane, Palghar; Severe Waterlogging Reported

The Indian Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane and which wil see thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds at isolated locations.

Reports note bright and sunny weather conditions with no waterlogging at Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Borivali.

The Western Express Highway is clear and dry with no waterlogging anywhere, according to reports.

Local forecaster Rushikesh Agre said, Mumbai has been through a lot in last 12-18 hours amidst extreme heavy rains. Now Mumbai Rains will reduce to on-off showers, mostly moderate. Coastal suburbs and South Mumbai have got very good rains but catchment areas got mostly moderate to heavy. As the monsoon proceeds more heavy rain will be there in catchment areas.

Maha Mumbai Metro services are operating smoothly, on schedule and without disruption. To accommodate increased passenger demand, additional Metro rakes have been positioned on standby across all corridors and can be deployed whenever required based on ridership and crowd levels.

A 22-year-old man was stabbed to death allegedly by a co-passenger inside a first-class compartment of a Mumbai local train during an argument over whether the doors should be kept open amid rains. A manhunt has been launched to arrest the attacker, who is on the run, they said.

Victim Mayank Lohar was fatally assaulted which also marked the arrival of monsoon in the city, between Andheri and Borivali railway stations in the western suburbs, they said.

One of them wanted the doors to be kept open, while the other objected, citing the rains. During the argument, the accused pulled out a sharp weapon from his possession and allegedly stabbed Lohar in the abdomen, they said.

A high tide of 3.41 metres was recorded at 8.28 am, while another high tide of 3.35 metres is expected at 7.41 pm, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.

Generally, heavy downpours combined with high tide lead to waterlogging in the metropolis, which is surrounded by the Arabian Sea.
 

Mumbai recorded an average rainfall of 195 mm, while the western suburbs received 208 mm and the eastern suburbs 167 mm during the 24 hours ending at 8 am, according to civic data.

Ruling Shiv Sena MLC Manisha Kayande urged Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde to intensify efforts for thorough cleaning of drains and removal of dry waste, stressing that such measures are vital to prevent waterlogging and traffic disruptions during the monsoon.

Kayande, whose party is a constituent of the BJP-led Mahayuti government, also said the issue should not be viewed through a political lens and stressed that the focus must remain on resolving problems faced by people.

"It is not about politics but solving people's problems," she told reporters in the Vidhan Bhavan premises.

A car was damaged after trees were uprooted in the Dadar area as heavy rainfall continues in the city. The car owner says, "...The tree fell on my car while it was parked...The driver was rescued by the public...The government should provide me some compensation for the damage..."

The Bhatsa Dam in Shahapur taluka, a major source of water for the region, recorded 20 mm of rain in the last 24 hours. The dam's water level currently stands at 108.79 metres, with the useful water storage recorded at 29.22% of its total capacity. No sewage or water discharge has been initiated from the dam yet, officials said.

Thane city recorded 77.97 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Wednesday, taking the season's total to 81.26 mm. Last year, it recorded 755.63 mm of rainfall for the same period, as per the RDMC.

As many as 27 complaints were received over the last 24 hours in Thane, including 18 of tree or branches falling and four fire-related calls, regional disaster management cell (RDMC) chief Yasin Tadvi said.

A large tree collapsed on two cars parked on a roadside in the Charai area of Thane city on Wednesday morning, damaging the two vehicles.

Local disaster cell staff and fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot. The work to cut and remove the debris was underway. No one was injured in the incident, Tadvi said.

Heavy rains lashed Maharashtra's Thane and Palghar districts over the last 24 hours, triggering a landslide at the scenic Malshej Ghat and leading to dozens of complaints of tree falls. A minor landslide was reported on Tuesday evening along the vital Malshej Ghat stretch, which connects Thane and Pune districts, Thane's Resident Deputy Collector Sandeep Mane said.

Aditya Thackeray criticised the government, urging it to focus on governance over “dirty politics.” He said Mumbai must become a “sponge city” and pointed to rainwater holding tanks started by BMC in 2018-19 to prevent waterlogging. With pumping stations and larger storm water drains, the tanks proved effective at Hind Mata/Gandhi Market and Milan Subway from 2020-2022. He alleged the current BJP regime doesn’t operate the Hind Mata pumps/tanks properly and hasn’t built a single new tank in 4 years while “draining BMC funds.”

He added the regime stalled the desalination project and only talks about it now. Thackeray said the government has neither made Maharashtra cities monsoon-ready for heavy rains nor self-reliant for low rains, asking who the regime works for besides “favoured builders and contractors.”

State Minister Girish Mahajan says, "After many years, there is likely to be a shortage of rain this year...If the rains continue to be delayed, the shortage of drinking water could become severe. Cities like Pune, Nashik, Mumbai, Thane, and nearby regions are likely to face water shortages. Water availability in Mumbai is already very low...We have decided that wherever water was being supplied daily, it will now be supplied once every two days. This step is being taken to conserve rainwater in every possible way...Water being supplied for farming purposes has been halted...Our priority is to link rivers and improve water management. Work is underway to open river channels, clear silt from canals and ponds, and increase storage capacity for the upcoming rains. This is part of our ongoing efforts..."

A BMC Official Rhitik says, "... We have not been able to find a temporary solution for this severe water logging... Our officers keep standing here to ensure vehicles don't pass through. But some rikshaw drivers still try to get their vehicles across... A rickshaw got stuck here in the centre of the subway. His life was in danger... Two of our officers helped bring him out..."

Mumbai woke up to heavy rainfall on Wednesday as the southwest monsoon intensified over the city a day after making its onset over Maharashtra's capital.
