The proposed measures could include wider availability of red-dyed diesel and coordination with states on road-diesel tax waivers, giving farmers, trucking operators and other fuel-intensive sectors potential relief from elevated costs.

  • US President Trump plans an executive order to ease access to lower-cost diesel
  • The order may expand access to red-dyed diesel used by agriculture and off-road vehicles
  • It could direct the Department of Transportation to work with states on waiving diesel taxes

US President Donald Trump is preparing an executive order aimed at easing access to lower-cost diesel as soaring fuel prices put pressure on consumers and businesses ahead of the November 3 elections, according to Reuters.

The order could be unveiled as soon as Monday and is expected to include several measures to increase the availability of tax-exempt diesel.

One option under consideration is expanding access to so-called red-dyed diesel, which is generally used by agricultural operators and certain off-road vehicles.

The order could also direct the US Department of Transportation to work with states on waiving taxes imposed on road diesel, according to Reuters sources. Such a move could help reduce costs for trucking and other industries that rely heavily on the fuel

Diesel prices have become a growing political concern for the Trump administration after reaching a record of around $6.50 per gallon last month.

The fuel is critical to the movement of goods across the US economy, making price increases particularly significant for freight operators and businesses.

The surge has been linked to disruptions stemming from the wars involving Iran and Ukraine, including attacks on refineries in Russia and the Middle East.

The administration has also pushed for additional diesel supplies internationally. G7 countries agreed last week to release 100 million barrels of diesel following pressure from Trump, who had considered restricting US diesel exports.

However, it remains unclear how much of the G7 release represents genuinely new supplies rather than volumes already covered under a global agreement announced in March.

The planned executive action comes as the administration seeks to contain fuel costs while reducing the impact of supply disruptions on the wider US economy.
