A two-season strategy could give Apple more room to market each product group instead of releasing its entire lineup together.

Apple has followed a familiar pattern for years. The company usually unveils its new iPhone lineup in September, with both standard and Pro models arriving at the same time.

That pattern could change this year.

Apple is now expected to spread its next iPhone lineup across two seasons, with the premium models arriving in the traditional September window and the standard iPhone 18 potentially moving to spring 2027.

Apple has officially confirmed a September 9 launch event, but the company has not disclosed which iPhone models will debut. Reports suggest the base iPhone 18 will not be part of the event.

September Could Become A Premium iPhone Season

The September event is expected to focus on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Apple could also use the event to introduce its first foldable iPhone, giving the company several high-end products to showcase at once.

That would leave the regular iPhone 18 for a second launch window in 2027. Reports have also linked this phase to a new iPhone 18e and a successor to the iPhone Air.

Why Split The Launch?

A two-season strategy could give Apple more room to market each product group instead of releasing its entire lineup together.

Despite the iPhone 17's success, Apple could break from its traditional September launch cycle for the next generation.

Reports citing supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman suggest Apple may launch the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in September 2026. The company could also introduce its first foldable iPhone at the same event.

The standard iPhone 18 may instead arrive around March 2027.

The approach could also help Apple give greater attention to its first foldable iPhone and its premium models in September. The standard iPhone range could then get its own spotlight when it arrives in spring.

The timing is notable because the current iPhone 17 remains exceptionally strong.

Counterpoint Research says it was the world's best-selling smartphone in Q2 2026, with a 6% share of global smartphone sales. The iPhone 17 Pro Max and Pro followed in second and third place.

So, Apple may not be changing the iPhone formula because demand is weak. Instead, the reported shift could be an attempt to create two major iPhone moments back to back, rather than relying on only September event.
