Tata Aeris CNG has caught the eye of buyers seeking strong fuel efficiency, with claimed mileage figures of almost 39 km/kg. However, whether it can achieve that number in everyday driving is a different question. Real-world mileage can vary significantly from certified figures due to traffic, driving habits, road conditions and other factors.
The Tata Aeris CNG's official ARAI-certified mileage is around 26.2–27.8 km/kg, depending on the variant. Although claims of 39 km/kg aren't supported by official certification, real-world highway runs under ideal cruising conditions can deliver impressively high fuel efficiency.
The latest Tata Aeris CNG delivers an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 27.8 km/kg. It is powered by a 1.2-litre CNG engine paired with a five-speed manual transmission. Tata's distinctive twin-cylinder CNG technology continues to feature on the Aeris, with the cylinders positioned beneath the floor to retain more practical and usable boot space.

In real-world driving conditions, fuel efficiency is often lower than the manufacturer's claimed figure. Traffic congestion, road conditions, driving habits, air-conditioning, passenger and luggage loads, and even tyre pressure can all affect fuel consumption. In city driving, frequent stops, braking and acceleration can result in significantly lower mileage. On highways and open roads, however, maintaining a consistent speed and accelerating smoothly can help the vehicle deliver mileage closer to its certified figure.
So, where could a figure close to 39 km/kg actually come from? In the real world, mileage can vary considerably based on several factors, including speed, traffic conditions, vehicle load, tyre pressure, air-conditioning use, road conditions and driving style. Under particularly favourable conditions—such as a steady highway run at consistent speeds—a vehicle can deliver significantly better mileage than its officially certified laboratory figure.
In fact, independent tests offer a more realistic indication of real-world mileage.
A car reviewer, MotorCent, reported achieving around 39 km/kg during a live test drive.
Additionally, in CarWale's independent real-world testing, the Tata Aeris CNG AMT delivered a tested fuel efficiency of 25.6 km/kg in mixed driving conditions.
The 39 km/kg figure should be viewed as an exceptional result achieved under controlled test conditions, rather than the mileage buyers can realistically expect in everyday use. In real-world driving—particularly in heavy city traffic, with frequent acceleration and air-conditioning—the actual mileage is likely to be significantly lower.

The Aeris CNG continues to be an appealing choice for buyers who clock high annual mileage. Its 210-litre usable boot space, twin-cylinder setup and the convenience of starting directly in CNG mode help overcome several of the compromises traditionally associated with CNG-powered cars.
