Schools in Mumbai and Thane are likely to remain open on Wednesday, July 8, as authorities have not yet announced any closure despite the India Meteorological Department (IMD) placing Mumbai, Thane and Palghar under a red alert due to heavy rainfall.

While the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is yet to issue any advisory on school operations, the Palghar district administration has declared a holiday for all educational institutions on Wednesday as a precautionary measure amid persistent rainfall.

In an order issued on Tuesday, Palghar District Collector and Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority, Dr. Indu Rani Jakhad, directed all Anganwadis, government and private schools, colleges, coaching centres and other educational institutions across the district to remain closed.

The decision was taken after reviewing the prevailing weather conditions and the IMD's latest forecast, with the administration citing student safety as its top priority.

The order noted that authorities also considered the time required for waterlogged roads to clear and normal conditions to return before suspending classes under the provisions of the Disaster Management Act, 2005.

Meanwhile, weather observers have warned of another spell of intense rainfall in Mumbai, with rainbands from the Arabian Sea expected to affect the north-western suburbs first before spreading across the city overnight.

Heavy rain over the past few days has already disrupted normal life in Mumbai, causing waterlogging, traffic congestion and delays to suburban train and road transport services.
