School students are back in session after the summer holidays, but they will soon get a break to celebrate several festivals. As August draws to a close, September will begin with major festivities, including Ganesh Chaturthi.
School holidays are limited across India in August and September, with most observances being regional rather than national. While a few holidays are scheduled during these months, they mainly apply to specific states, communities or schools.
School Holidays In The Last Week Of August 2026: Full List
- August 25 (Tuesday): Eid-e-Milad
- August 26 (Wednesday): Onam
- August 28 (Friday): Raksha Bandhan
As per reports, Onam 2026 will be celebrated in Kerala on Aug. 26. This day, known as Thiruvonam, is the main day of the festival. First Onam falls on Aug. 25, followed by Third Onam on Aug. 27 and Fourth Onam on Aug. 28, 2026. Some calendars may also list Onam as a holiday in late August or early September.

- September 4 (Friday): Janmashtami
- September 14 (Monday): Ganesh Chaturthi
Parents and students should also note that holiday schedules can differ across states such as Maharashtra, Telangana, Karnataka and Goa. Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayak Chaturthi, falls on Sept. 14, 2026. Parents should also keep a tab on Ganpati Visarjan holiday dates, yet to be announced by Maharashtra government.
However, dates listed in national or government holiday calendars do not necessarily mean that all schools across India will remain closed. State government notifications, education board guidelines and individual school calendars determine school holidays. Some festivals may also be designated as restricted or limited holidays rather than full holidays.

School closures can vary from state to state, board to board and even from one school to another. To avoid confusion, parents and students should check the official 2026 holiday notification issued by their state education department or school management.
They should also refer to the school's academic calendar available on its official website or through school circulars, especially in the case of CBSE, ICSE and private schools that may follow their own schedules.
