Amid concerns over AI taking over several jobs, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said that coding will be automated first, but design and product sense may remain human roles longer.

Dario Amodei made the comment in Nikhil Kamath's podcast 'People by WTF'.

As AI automates technical tasks, human-centric tasks may grow in importance, said Amodei.

When asked about what he did before founding Anthropic, Amodei said that he was originally a biologist. "I did my undergrad in physics, my PhD in biophysics, and I wanted to understand biological systems so that I could cure disease."

Here are five quotes from Dario Amodei

On the Approaching "AI Tsunami"
"It's as if this tsunami is coming at us. It's so close, we can see it on the horizon, and yet people are coming up with explanations like, 'Oh, it's not actually a tsunami, it's just a trick of the light.' I think there hasn't been a public awareness of the risk."

On How AI Will Reshape Startups
"Don't build thin wrappers around models — anyone can copy that. Build moats: Domain expertise, regulation knowledge, industry integration, unique workflows."

On the Intimacy and Risks of AI
"A co-founder once gave Claude his diary. Claude identified fears he hadn't written down — and was mostly right. This can be positive — like an angel on your shoulder. But it can also enable manipulation. This is why we avoid ad-based business models: if you're not paying, you're the product."

On Profit vs. Safety
"Warning about AI risks is not a good marketing strategy — but we do it because we think it's necessary. We advocate for AI regulation even though it hurts us commercially."

On the Future of Human Work
"Coding will be automated first. Software engineering later. But design, product sense, understanding users, managing AI systems — these may remain human roles longer. Comparative advantage still matters: even if humans do 5% of a workflow, AI amplifies that."

If used carelessly, AI could cause de-skilling. Students using AI to write essays lose learning. Some coding workflows also reduce skill development. Whether humans get “stupider” depends on how we deploy AI.

On AI and jobs / IT services

"Automation scope will expand — that's a challenge for everyone. But other moats may matter more: Physical-world integration, human relationships, institutional knowledge. As AI automates technical tasks, human-centric tasks may grow in importance."

On Predicting the Future
"There's a recurring mistake: assuming something won't happen because it seems too big or strange. But simple extrapolation plus first-principles reasoning often predicts the future — and few people do it."
