A 28-day-old baby has become Zerodha's youngest customer, highlighting that investing through a minor account can begin well before a child reaches school age.

Zerodha co-founder Nithin Kamath recently shared the unusual milestone on X, saying the infant's parents opened a minor account and made the first investment a week later.

The development has also put the spotlight on how parents or legal guardians can open a minor demat and trading account with Zerodha, which does not charge an account-opening fee.

However, a minor account comes with several restrictions. Here is how the online application works and what parents should know before opening one.

What documents are needed to open a Zerodha minor account?

Parents should keep the minor's and guardian's PAN cards, the minor's Aadhaar details, a passport-size photograph and the guardian's signature ready.

Proof of the child's date of birth is also required. Zerodha accepts documents such as a birth certificate, passport, school leaving certificate or higher secondary marksheet.

Parents must also submit proof of the minor's bank account. This can include a cancelled cheque, bank statement or passbook. The document should clearly display the account holder's name and account number, along with the bank's logo or seal, MICR and IFSC details.

If the account is being operated by a legal guardian who is not the child's parent, a legal guardian letter is also required.

Step-by-step: How to open a Zerodha minor account online?

The process starts with the guardian's Zerodha account.

Step 1: Start the application

Visit Zerodha's minor account signup page and log in using the guardian's Zerodha credentials. Review the guardian's profile information and update it if required.

Step 2: Verify contact details

Enter the guardian's mobile number and email address. The details are verified through one-time passwords. Parents can also use contact details that are not associated with another Zerodha account.

Step 3: Enter the child's details

Provide the minor's PAN number and date of birth. The application then moves to Aadhaar-based verification through DigiLocker.

Step 4: Complete Aadhaar verification

Enter the minor's Aadhaar number and verify it using the OTP sent to the registered mobile number.

Step 5: Add bank details

Enter the minor's bank account information and accept the applicable terms and conditions.

Step 6: Complete IPV

Both the guardian and minor need to participate in the In-Person Verification (IPV) process. For online IPV, the applicant needs to access Zerodha's verification page and allow camera access.

A four-digit OTP displayed during the process must remain visible on camera while completing the verification.

Step 7: Upload documents and e-sign

Upload the required documents after completing IPV. Nomination is optional. The guardian then completes the electronic signing process using Aadhaar.

Once the application is submitted, Zerodha says account opening can take up to 48 working hours. Login credentials are sent to the registered email address.

What can a Zerodha minor account be used for?

A minor account cannot be operated in the same way as an adult trading account. It cannot be used for intraday trading, futures and options, or offers for sale (OFS).

Funds in the account can be used for applicable charges, but not for purchasing shares or government securities.

However, minors can invest in mutual funds through Zerodha Coin. The account can also be used to sell existing holdings and participate in IPOs, buybacks and takeover offers.

When the child turns 18, the minor account must be converted into an individual account.

The 28-day-old investor may be Zerodha's youngest customer, but the account's investment options remain governed by the restrictions applicable to all minor accounts.
