The southwest monsoon has set in over Mumbai 16 days before the usual date, making it the earliest since 1950, the India Meteorological Department said on Monday.
According to the IMD's Mumbai office, the data available since 1950 shows that this is the earliest arrival of the monsoon in the city.

In its weekly weather forecast, the weather department said Delhi is likely to witness cloudy skies with the possibility of thunder, lightning, and rain.
In Mumbai, 135.4 mm of rainfall was recorded in the past 24 hours. The city received complaints of waterlogging in six locations, 18 incidents of short circuits, and five complaints of wall collapses.
"No injuries have been reported in the city so far," the CM’s office said.
The Chief Minister's Office said that 25 houses partially collapsed in Baramati, while seven persons trapped in flooded areas were rescued. “70 to 80 families have been shifted to safer places. Mobile services that were disrupted yesterday are now being restored,” the CM’s Office said.
One person died in a lightning strike, while 48 people were rescued from inundated areas as heavy rains battered several places in Maharashtra, including Mumbai, on Monday, the office of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said.
Kolkata and parts of South Bengal experienced light to moderate rainfall on Monday, which the Indian Meteorological Department described as a precursor to the arrival of the Southwest Monsoon, currently progressing into various parts of the northeastern region.
According to weather officials, a low-pressure area is likely to form over west-central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal around May 27.
Under its influence, heavy rainfall is likely from May 28 over some districts of West Bengal, a Met official said.
The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority on Monday said that the southwest monsoon entered the Rayalaseema region of the state.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department observed that the southwest monsoon has further advanced into some more parts of the central Arabian Sea, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and the remaining parts of Tamil Nadu, along with some parts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Train services on Metro Line-3 are temporarily curtailed due to an unforeseen technical issue. The services will be operating only up to Worli Station instead of Acharya Atre Chowk.
"We would like to clarify that this portion of entry/ exit where water seepage observed is still under construction and not accessible to the public. As a precautionary measure, and to ensure passenger safety, train services between Worli and Acharya Atrey Chowk have been temporarily suspended," Mumbai Metro said.

Heavy downpour continued to cause damage in the northern districts of Kerala, where people were shifted to relief camps and safer locations in many places, reported NDTV.
With continued intense rain, several tribal families from Puzhamkuni hamlet in Wayanad's Sultan Bathery were also moved to relief camps, district authorities told NDTV on Monday.

The India Meteorological Department on Monday issued a red alert for Karnataka, predicting extremely heavy rainfall during the day. As early monsoon showers lashed several parts of the state, causing waterlogging and traffic disruption.

The incessant rain has led to waterlogging on railway tracks, causing delays in suburban train services, which were running five to ten minutes behind schedule, reported NDTV. Railway officials told NDTV, slow trains going towards Kalyan on the main line of the Central Railway are running five minutes late, while the fast trains going towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus are running ten minutes late. Train services on the harbour and western line are also facing similar delays.
Overnight and continuing morning rain has led to waterlogging in several areas of the city. Many low-lying areas largely affected, with visuals showing vehicles moving through the waterlogged streets.

The Southwest Monsoon, which brings the season of rainfall over mainland India, has been progressing rapidly since its onset over Kerala on Saturday. As per an update shared by the India Meteorological Department on Sunday, the monsoon winds have progressed northwards and entered into Maharashtra.
The onset of Monsoon could be barely 72 hours away in Mumbai and Bengaluru -- two of the topmost metropolitan cities of the country. The rainfall laden winds could enter into the two cities over the next three days, according to the IMD.
