Punjab is bracing for a seven-hour bandh on Friday, Aug. 21, 2026, with the shutdown set to be observed from 7 am to 2 pm.

The bandh, called by the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha, seeks the release of Sikh prisoners, including parole for Jagtar Singh Hawara, who is serving a life sentence in connection with the 1995 assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, the Economic Times reported.

The Morcha has also sought the release of other ‘Bandi Singhs', a term used for Sikh prisoners convicted in cases linked to militancy during Punjab's insurgency.

The bandh is expected to disrupt normal movement and commercial activity across the state, particularly during the seven-hour window.

Markets And Shops

Markets and commercial establishments are expected to remain closed during the bandh. Residents with non-essential shopping plans may need to complete them before 7 am or after 2 pm.

Buses And Taxis

Public transport and road-based movement are likely to be affected. Commuters may face delays or difficulty finding buses and taxis during the bandh hours.

Offices

There is no indication of a statewide closure of government or private offices. However, employees travelling by road could face disruptions.

Schools And Colleges

The Punjab government has said schools and colleges will remain open on August 21. Students should nevertheless check with their respective institutions for any local changes.
