The Modi government's push towards labour reforms has been given a thumbs up from the top boss at the International Labour Organization (ILO). Director-General of the ILO, Guy Ryder, during his India visit, praised the government's push to codify labour laws. In a conversation with BloombergQuint he said, “India is not alone in looking at labour reform questions, the legislation in question has often been around for a very long time. I really understand the objective explained to me by the government which is of codification and simplification of a large number of laws. I think simplification of this type has its merits.”
The labour ministry is seeking to codify India's existing 44 labour laws into four codes. These laws will be codified under, Labour Code on Wages, Labour Code on Industrial Relations, Labour Code on Social Security & Welfare and Labour Code on Safety & Working Conditions.
Ryder, after his meetings with Prime Minister Narenda Modi, also pointed out that the ILO shares many of the policy objectives articulated by the Indian government. He said, “I see a strong convergence between many of the policy objectives the Indian government has set itself in terms of employment generation, poverty, skills, social protection and these are all areas where the ILO and the Indian government have similar objectives.”
