JPMorgan Chase has named veteran dealmaker Rob Sweeney as global chair of its investment banking division.

Sweeney, a former executive at Goldman Sachs and Sycamore, has joined the firm to advise major corporate clients in the consumer and retail sectors. The appointment, announced in an internal memo on October 6, 2026, will also see Sweeney work alongside senior bankers to strengthen key client relationships.

According to a report by Reuters, Sweeney will advise major corporate clients, particularly in consumer and retail, while supporting key relationships and leading the bank's security and resilience efforts, according to global banking co-heads Filippo Gori and John Simmons.

The hiring comes as banks jockey for market share in a dealmaking recovery after several muted years for mergers and equity issuance.

JPMorgan's strategic hiring push is beginning to pay off. In the second quarter, the bank's investment banking fees jumped 30% year over year, marking their strongest level since the 2021 market boom. Management expects that momentum to continue, with Co-President Doug Petno forecasting investment banking revenue to rise by a mid-to-high teens percentage in the third quarter from a year earlier. An active deal pipeline and broad-based corporate demand are expected to remain key drivers of growth.

JPMorgan has added more than 1,000 bankers globally this year, according to a source, while expanding coverage teams across sectors and regions to capitalise on a pickup in corporate activity.

JPMorgan has bolstered its global banking ranks with a string of senior hires in recent months, including Amy Lissauer as global head of shareholder activism and Michael Flynn as head of small-cap investment banking.

By bringing Sweeney's decades of boardroom relationships and deep transactional expertise on board, JPMorgan is further strengthening its leadership in the league tables and signalling to rivals that it is determined to dominate corporate advisory as deal activity gathers pace heading into next year.
