TikTok and Amazon are reversing roles in their battle for online shoppers. After Amazon borrowed TikTok's short-video format to promote products, TikTok is now building a standalone shopping destination that takes on Amazon's core e-commerce business.
The ByteDance-owned company has quietly launched a separate TikTok Shop application in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines. The app is available on Apple's iOS and Google's Android platforms. Social media consultant Matt Navarra first spotted the rollout.

TikTok is adding incentives to encourage shoppers to use the standalone platform. These include free shipping offers, exclusive deals and benefits on first orders. The app also promotes secure in-app payments.
The strategy mirrors Amazon's earlier move into social commerce. In December 2022, Amazon launched Inspire, a short-video shopping feed featuring products through videos and photographs. The feature aimed to turn content discovery into purchases within Amazon's ecosystem.

The US market remains a major unanswered question. TikTok has not disclosed whether it plans to bring the application to America. Such an expansion would put it against Amazon, Temu, Walmart and Target.

The launch also reflects TikTok's broader push beyond entertainment. The company has been expanding into gaming, restaurant discovery, sports, hotel bookings and microdramas. A dedicated shopping app could give its commerce business greater visibility and a stronger identity.
