One of the things the data analysts on our side obsessed over was "composition"—whether the electorate looked close enough to 2024 for Republicans to win. And despite polls that showed a Democrat blowout, the data kept on telling us the same story: in some states turnout was merely OK, in other states it was downright amazing, and in no state was it catastrophic. There was a genuine sense of optimism on our team: our people were showing up. So, I asked the smartest data guy I know, does that mean we're going to shock the world? "No," he told me. "We might do better than the polls suggest. But the data is telling us that a lot of Trump/Vance 2024 voters are pissed and planning to vote for the other guys. Our voters are turning out, but they may not vote for us." Well, that looks prophetic now. Our voters did show up. In Florida, for example, the electorate was 9 points more Republican than Democrat, just a couple points worse than 2024. Undoubtedly there were places we could have done better on turnout. But the main problem is not turnout. The main problem is that many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026. There will be a lot of infighting and arguing over what happened and why that is. One of the pollsters I really respect told me that our economic messaging wasn’t sharp enough down the stretch. I’m sure that’s true. But the real reason we lost is obvious to almost everyone. Another pollster—one of the smartest people I know in politics, told me yesterday we’d lose the generic ballot by 13 points. I felt negative going into Tuesday, but even I was shocked by this. In his polling, he saw that a lot of Trump 2024 voters were angry and planning to vote for Democrats. He asked those voters who had abandoned us what would cause them to come back on our team. The top four answers, accounting for nearly all of the responses were: 1) End the war 2) Focus on cost of living/inflation 3) Put America First 4) Change our relationship to Israel Our voters showed up. And the above four reasons are why many of them voted for Democrats. This is according to a pollster who nailed the results. While many spent Monday attacking Rachel Campos Duffy for calling for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, it turns out her political advice was sound. (She’s also a great person.) In the next few months, there's going to be a lot of gaslighting. Expect to hear any number of establishment politicians say the solution to our woes is amnesty. I'm open to the idea that we should change enforcement—by focusing more on businesses that hire illegal labor, for instance. But anyone pushing amnesty is lying to you. The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night. If you'd like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so. Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree, that's at least honest. But everyone knows why we lost. And any honest conversation about where we go from here must start there. I remain hopeful about our country. To the people who are pissed off and want to say, “I told you so”: you’re right, you did tell us so. Take that energy into electing Republicans who share your worldview. To the people who are just pissed at the results, you should be. Let’s take that anger and get back to the work of saving our country.

US President Donald Trump says the war on Iran played a role in Republicans’ losses in the midterm elections, as Democrats are set to take control of the House and the Senate and challenge his legislative agenda.

“I think a part of it was Iran, but at the same time, people understood the importance of what I’ve done with Iran,” Trump said in a telephone interview with Fox.

He said voters were probably not willing to accept the short-term consequences of the price of petrol.

Democrats have won control of the US House in addition to the US Senate, delivering a shockingly decisive rebuke of Republican governance in Washington and ushering in a new era of congressional resistance to President Donald Trump.

The midterm elections Tuesday channeled voters' deep frustrations over high prices, the Iran war and concerns over government corruption. Democrats routed their rivals across the map, from Texas to Iowa to New Hampshire, including states Trump won by double digits just two years ago.

Democratic control will profoundly reshape Trump's final two years in office and likely hamstring his agenda.

Democrat Troy Jackson has won the election to US Senate from Maine by defeating longtime Republican Senator Susan Collins.

Trump strongly pushed for Graham to be named senator after her brother Lindsey Graham died in July. Trump visited the state twice in the weeks before the election as her chances appeared to be fading.

“He loves this country dearly and I appreciate all that he has done,” Graham said.

Graham told the crowd they should remain as proud of her brother as she is.

“This is a tough cycle and all of us need to be involved as we chart a path forward. It is clear that we as conservatives have work to do and that work starts tonight,” Graham said.

In a post on X, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iranian politician who has served as Speaker of Iran's Parliament took an aim at US midterm election results and wrote, "Conscience or the cost of living, Americans said NO TO WAR, and we endorse this message. US President Donald Trump has said he was willing to accept the results of the mid-term elections, where Democrats posted significant gains, flipping key Senate and gubernatorial races.

"I am absolutely willing to accept those results," Trump said in an interview with The New York Times on Tuesday night as results trickled in.

Democrats had wrested the US Senate races in Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio - states where Trump campaigned hard, urging voters to pretend that he was on the ballot.

After being defeated by Democrat Amy Acton in Ohio, Republican Vivek Ramaswamy says, "... I have confidence that sometimes these things happen for a reason. God has a plan. We're His instruments, and I still believe that in the fullness of time, our state's best days and our country's best days will still yet be ahead of us. This is the greatest country known to the history of mankind..."

Democrat Gina Hinojosa has won the race for Texas governor, defeating incumbent Republican Greg Abbott. Hinojosa will be the first Democratic governor of Texas since 1993.

Democrat Sherrod Brown has defeated Republican Jon Husted in Ohio, flipping a US Senate seat for Democrats.

James Talarico has won the US Senate election in Texas, the Associated Press projects, securing Democrats their first Senate win in the Lone Star State since 1988. Talarico, a state lawmaker from Round Rock, cleared a hurdle that several high-profile Democrats before him, including Beto O'Rourke, Wendy Davis and Collin Allred, could not.

Paxton's defeat is a significant setback for Republicans. Because he ousted incumbent Sen. John Cornyn in the primary, the result could raise questions about whether Cornyn would have fared better against Talarico in the general election.

Democrats have flipped two US Senate seats and six House seats, as well as Georgia’s governorship.

Senate:

• Roy Cooper defeated Michael Whatley – North Carolina.
• Annie Andrews defeated Darline Graham – South Carolina.

US House:

• Three seats – Pennsylvania
• One seat – New Jersey

Democrat Zach Dembo has flipped Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District, winning a Republican-held seat in the US House.

Democrat Annie Andrews defeated GOP Sen. Darline Graham in the South Carolina Senate race in a major upset. Andrews, 45, is a pediatrician who campaigned on healthcare access and affordability, along with fighting corruption in Washington.

She faced Graham, the incumbent senator who was appointed to serve out the remainder of her brother Lindsey Graham's term after his sudden death in July.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly encouraged voters to pretend he's on the ballot this Election Day. They appear to be taking his advice — and that's not a good thing for the Republican president or his party.

Early returns suggest major swings away from the GOP, even in Trump's adopted home state of Florida. Young voters in particular appear to have shifted dramatically away from the GOP after Trump made inroads with this group in 2024.

And among the voters who had Trump in mind when they cast their vote, about twice as many wanted to express opposition to the Republican president as those who wanted to support him.

Democrats flip New Jersey House seat held by Republican Tom Kean. Rebecca Bennett, a former Navy helicopter pilot, has defeated two-term Rep. Tom Kean, who missed four months of votes in Washington this year while undergoing treatment for depression, a diagnosis he did not disclose until his return.

In a post on X, Avi Dandiya wrote, "Huge congratulations to my niece, Pia Dandiya! She just pulled off an incredible win in this year’s US midterms, flipping a seat right in the heart of Republican territory in Florida. The whole Dandiya family and all our friends are beyond proud of you, Pia! Well done!"

Democrat Adam Hamawy has defeated Republican Gregg Mele and won election to the US House in New Jersey’s 12th District. Hamawy is a surgeon who volunteered in Gaza.

Republican Kevin Hern, a close ally of President Donald Trump, won election to the US Senate representing Oklahoma, defeating Democrat N’Kiyla Jasmine Thomas.
 

Democrat Pia Dandiya has won the race for Florida's 22nd Congressional District, defeating Republican Casey Askar in the contest for the open US House seat.

The district includes parts of Palm Beach, Broward, Hendry and Collier counties. Dandiya was born and raised in Palm Beach County to parents who immigrated from India, according to her campaign website and published profiles.

Democrats notched key victories in North Carolina, Georgia and New Hampshire as they sought to regain control of Congress and loosen Republicans' grip on Washington.

Former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper defeated Republican Michael Whatley, delivering Democrats a crucial pickup as the party aims to flip at least four Republican-held Senate seats.

In Georgia, Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff secured a second term, fending off Republican Representative Mike Collins and holding onto a seat Republicans had viewed as one of their best pickup opportunities. Georgia Democrats also celebrated a historic win as former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms defeated Republican healthcare executive Rick Jackson to become the first Black woman elected governor of any U.S. state.

Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms won Georgia's governor's race defeating Republican Rick Jackson and flipping control of the battleground state office for the first time in 24 years.

Republican Rep. Byron Donalds was elected Florida's first Black governor in a race that was viewed as unexpectedly competitive down the stretch, defeating Democratic nominee David Jolly.

Republican Shelley Capito wins reelection to US Senate from West Virginia.

Democratic's Suhas Subramanyam won reelection in Virginia's 10th Congressional District, defeating Republican challenger Dave T. Beckwith.

First elected in 2024, Subramanyam is the first Indian American from the East Coast elected to Congress. He previously served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 2019 to 2023 and in the Virginia State Senate from 2023 to 2024.

He serves on the Oversight and Government Reform, Ethics, and Science, Space, and Technology committees. Subramanyam has previously supported legislation aimed at lowering toll, utility and prescription drug costs.

He also co-founded a caucus focused on bipartisanship and has backed bipartisan bills addressing K-12 education, tax relief and gun safety.

Democrat Helena Foulkes won election for governor of Rhode Island, defeating Republican Aaron Guckian while Democrat Wesley Bell wins reelection to US House in Missouri's 1st Congressional District.

Republican Ashley Moody won election to the US Senate seat representing Florida, defeating Democrat Angie Nixon.

A number of Indian American candidates are in the electoral fray for posts ranging from Governor to city council members. Democrat Nithya Raman, who was born in Kerala, is locked in a keen contest with her former boss Karen Bass for the post of Mayor of Los Angeles, the second-largest city in the US.

Indian-American lawmakers Ro Khanna, Ami Bera, Pramila Jayapal and Suhas Subramanyam are seeking re-election to the US House of Representatives, while fellow Democrats Pia Dandiya and Amish Shah are in the fray in competitive races to make their debut as Congresspersons.

Polling began on Tuesday at 6:00 a.m. eastern time in Indiana and Kentucky and in a staggered manner across time zones in the US. Polling began in California at 7:00 am local time (10:00 am Eastern) and in Alaska at 11:00 Eastern Time.

At stake in the elections are all 435 seats of the House and 37 seats in the 100-member Senate.

Elections are also being held for the post of Governor in 36 states, including in Ohio, where Indian American Vivek Ramaswamy is locked in a keen contest with his rival and Democratic nominee Amy Acton.

The first results were expected to trickle in from 5:00 am on Wednesday (India Time).
