Iran's deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, has urged the BRICS group to serve as a platform for equal cooperation, mutual respect, independent decision-making, and the defence of nations' rights against monopoly, sanctions, and coercion.

Currently in New Delhi for preparatory meetings ahead of the BRICS foreign ministers' summit, Gharibabadi wrote on X that Iran's active participation in BRICS is a strategic choice aimed at strengthening genuine multilateralism, expanding equal cooperation, and helping to shape a fairer order in international relations.

Gharibabadi stated, “BRICS will play its historical role more fully when it becomes a platform for equal cooperation, mutual respect, independence in decision-making, and the defence of nations' rights against monopoly, sanctions and coercive policies.”

He added, “The future path of the world passes through cooperation, justice and genuine multilateralism.”

Gharibabadi highlighted Iran's geopolitical, energy, transit, scientific, and human capacities, stating that the country can play an effective role in BRICS' agenda for balanced development, economic security, regional connectivity, and strengthening the voice of independent nations.

He emphasised that opposing US unilateral coercive measures and their "illegal, anti-development effects" is integral to defending economic justice and the right of nations to develop.

The upcoming BRICS summit in New Delhi occurs as the group—including Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates—seeks to forge a common position on the US-Israeli war of aggression against Iran.

Iran has urged India, the BRICS chair for 2026, to use the platform to build a consensus condemning US and Israeli actions. Reportedly, the main differences within BRICS have emerged between Iran and the UAE.

The US launched many of its attacks on Iran during the war that began on Feb. 28 from UAE territory, leading Tehran to target American bases in the Arab country. This war has caused soaring energy prices, prompting many BRICS nations to introduce emergency economic measures.

China will be represented by its ambassador to India at the BRICS summit, as Foreign Minister Wang Yi is hosting US President Donald Trump in Beijing.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is expected to attend the meeting.

Despite existing tensions, Indian officials have expressed hope of issuing a joint statement after the summit.
