Banks across India will remain closed today, May 9, 2026. It is the second Saturday of the month. In Kolkata, West Bengal, banks will remain closed on account of Rabindra Jayanti. The day marks the 165th birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.
When Are Banks Closed?
As per the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) region-wise holiday calendar for the fiscal year 2026-27, banks are scheduled to remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays, along with all Sundays of every month.
Banks remain open on the first, third, and fifth Saturdays of the month, except when those days coincide with national, religious, or regional holidays.
The RBI's holiday list varies from state to state depending on national, religious, and regional observances. This month, the RBI has notified six bank holidays for all public and private sector banks.

- May 3 (Sunday): Weekly holiday – banks closed across India

Why Are Banks Closed In Kolkata On May 9, 2026?
As per the RBI's guidelines, banks across India are scheduled to remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays.
Alongside marking the second Saturday, May 9 also marks the birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. The day is also known as Rabindra Jayanti or Poncheeshe Boishakh in Kolkata.
It falls on the 25th day of Baisakh in the Bengali calendar, which is May 7 this year.
However, the public holiday will be officially observed on May 9, as the date has been moved to the nearest Saturday to facilitate institutional closures.
