Google has successfully run an artificial intelligence (AI) model aboard a satellite in orbit and received its first complete response back on Earth, this is a step towards its plans to take AI computing beyond the planet. The test is part of Project Suncatcher, the company's research initiative to develop space-based AI infrastructure. Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced the milestone on X, calling it a “‘Hello World' milestone for Project Suncatcher”.
Sharing the update, Pichai revealed, "After launching our prototype satellite a few weeks ago, we've now successfully sent a command up to orbit, booted up the TPU, run the prompt, and received our first complete response back on Earth – a haiku!"

The experiment marks an important early step in Google's efforts to determine whether advanced AI processors can operate reliably beyond Earth's atmosphere.
What Is Google's Project Suncatcher?
Project Suncatcher is a long-term research initiative exploring the possibility of building AI data centres using networks of solar-powered satellites equipped with specialised TPUs. The aim behind this Google project is to investigate whether interconnected satellites can eventually support large-scale AI computing workloads in orbit.
The company launched its prototype satellite on October 1, 2026, in collaboration with satellite manufacturer Planet. The mission is designed to test the performance and reliability of Google's AI chips under the challenging conditions of space.
First AI-Generated Haiku From Space
While passing over a ground station in Svalbard, Norway, the satellite received a prompt for its onboard Gemma 4 open model. Powered by its TPU, it generated a haiku about space and transmitted the result directly to Earth.
The AI-generated haiku read:
"Blue marble below,
Data streams in silent grace,
Starlight feeds my core."
Google generated the first-ever AI response using a data-centre-class TPU in orbit.
Why Google Is Sending AI Chips Into Space
Google's Project Suncatcher focuses on testing the viability of space-based, solar-powered satellites for intensive AI computing. Shifting data processing to orbit could harness abundant solar power and offer a sustainable alternative that reduces the substantial land and energy demands of ground-based data centres.

However, Project Suncatcher remains an experimental initiative, with further testing required before space-based AI data centres become commercially viable.
