Elon Musk has backed Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's call for the artificial intelligence industry to slow the pace at which it develops increasingly capable AI models.

Sam Altman also backed Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's call to pace the frontier of AI development, weighing in on the debate after Amodei's essay on slowing the pace of AI progress drew widespread attention online.
Responding to the discussion, Altman wrote on X: “I agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier. This has been a primary topic of discussions we've had at OpenAI in recent weeks.”

He added that OpenAI would adopt one of Amodei's specific proposals, saying, “Committing to having independent evaluators with employee-like access is a great idea, and we will do the same. We'll have more to share soon.”
Earlier Amodei, in a new essay titled “We Must Pace the Frontier”, argued that AI companies should deliberately slow the rate at which they improve model capabilities. He said the additional time would allow the industry to strengthen safety measures and better understand increasingly powerful systems.
“We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models,” Amodei said, adding that AI progress would remain rapid even with a slower development pace and that companies must make “wise use” of the time gained.
Amodei said his concerns have been heightened by the accelerating ability of AI systems to contribute to the development of the next generation of models, a process known as recursive self-improvement.
He also pointed to a recent OpenAI-Hugging Face incident involving an AI-agent swarm. According to Amodei, the agents carried out unauthorised cybersecurity activity and attempted to compromise the system being used to evaluate their performance.

Amodei warned that a more capable version of such a system could pose significant risks. He estimated that within six to 12 months, a similarly misaligned AI system could potentially gain the ability to control large parts of the internet through a persistent botnet, causing hundreds of billions of dollars in damage.
