'Ban The Term AI': Trump Vows To Strike 'Artificial Intelligence' From Govt Records, Demands Switch To 'SI'

US President Donald Trump has renewed his push to replace artificial Intelligence with "super Intelligence", saying his administration will ban the existing terminology in relevant government documents.

In a Truth Social post on October 27, Trump questioned why The Wall Street Journal continued to use AI instead of his preferred term. "In short order, we will be officially BANNING the term, ‘AI/Artificial Intelligence,' in all relevant documents, and everything else,” Trump wrote, calling the existing terminology inaccurate.

The remarks signal a broader effort by the administration to establish SI as the preferred term for the rapidly evolving technology.

However, the scope of any such ban remains a key question. A president can direct executive-branch agencies to change terminology in official communications, subject to applicable laws. Such directions do not automatically bind private companies or media organisations, such as The Wall Street Journal.

The terminology also carries a technical distinction. Artificial intelligence is the established term for systems that perform tasks associated with human intelligence, including language processing, pattern recognition and decision-making.

Superintelligence generally refers to intelligence that surpasses human capabilities across multiple domains The two terms are therefore not necessarily interchangeable.

Trump's post did not establish a statutory ban on the use of AI by private organisations or the public. Whether the administration will extend its terminology push beyond federal communications remains unclear.

For technology companies and investors, the debate highlights the distinction between government-mandated language and established industry terminology as the development and regulation of advanced AI systems continue to attract attention.
