Mumbai Indians (MI) last lifted the title in 2020, when the world was held hostage by the COVID-19 virus. Since then, silverware has eluded the five-time champions, who got within touching distance of the final last year, but were knocked out by Punjab Kings at the penultimate stage.

This season, MI arrive with a significantly strengthened squad and renewed tactical clarity, determined to end a five-year trophy drought and become the first team to win six Indian Premier League (IPL) trophies.

Squad Build: Low Purse, High Efficiency

Mumbai Indians approached the December 2025 auction with the lowest purse in the league (Rs 2.75 crore), forcing a targeted, efficient strategy.

The standout move was the return of Quinton de Kock for Rs 1 crore, his base price, in a deal that reunites him with his explosive former captain Rohit Sharma.

The franchise had completed most of their business ahead of the auction, addressing key gaps during the trade window, bringing in Shardul Thakur, Sherfane Rutherford and Mayank Markande to deepen bowling and all-round options.

The only injury concern for MI is that promising all-rounder Atharva Ankolekar has been ruled out for the season following knee surgery.

2025 Recap: Close, But Not Close Enough

Last season, MI recovered from four losses in their opening five matches to then go on a six-game winning streak to ultimately make it to the playoffs in fourth position.

They defeated Gujarat Titans in the Eliminator but fell short against Punjab Kings despite posting 203/6. Mumbai-lad Shreyas Iyer's unbeaten 87 off 41 balls for PBKS sealed a successful chase, exposing glaring gaps in MI's death bowling.

That defeat directly influenced their 2026 squad build, with the additions of Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur aimed at providing support to Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult in high-pressure overs.

This season, MI have plugged the gaps in their squad and approach the season as one of the most well-rounded squads in the competition. The question asked of them is no longer about squad strength, It is about execution under pressure, particularly in high-scoring games and knockout scenarios.

A sixth title is well within reach. Delivering it will depend on whether Mumbai can translate squad depth into consistent performances in high-pressure situations.
