Czechia and South Africa played out a 1-1 draw in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group A clash at Atlanta Stadium on Thursday, with Teboho Mokoena's late penalty cancelling out Michal Sadilek's first-half opener. Czechia controlled much of the contest and scored one of the tournament's earliest goals so far, but their increasingly defensive approach allowed South Africa to grow into the game and earn a deserved share of the points.

Czechia made the perfect start in the sixth minute. Vladimír Coufal's long throw caused confusion inside the South African box, allowing Alexandr Sojka to bring the ball under control and set up Sadilek, who finished clinically past Ronwen Williams to make it 1-0.

South Africa struggled to gain a foothold before the break and saw Mokoena and Thalente Mbatha pick up yellow cards in the 33rd and 40th minutes respectively. Looking to inject more attacking threat, coach Hugo Broos introduced Relebohile Mofokeng in place of Jayden Adams at half-time.

The second half followed a different pattern as South Africa pushed higher up the pitch. Czechia responded with a series of substitutions, bringing on Jaroslav Zelený and Pavel Šulc shortly after the restart before introducing Lukáš Provod and captain Tomáš Souček midway through the half.

After sustained pressure, South Africa finally tested goalkeeper Matěj Kovář for the first time in the 74th minute. A minute later, Czech defender Ladislav Krejčí was booked as the Europeans came under increasing pressure.

The breakthrough arrived in the 83rd minute when Thapelo Maseko's goal-bound effort struck the arm of substitute Pavel Šulc inside the penalty area. Mokoena stepped up and calmly converted the resulting spot-kick, sending Kovář the wrong way to level the scores.

South Africa nearly completed the turnaround five minutes later, but Kovář produced an important save to deny Mofokeng's powerful strike from distance. At the other end, Czechia came agonisingly close to snatching victory in stoppage time. Patrik Schick narrowly missed Šulc's low cross before Provod fired wide of the far post. South Africa also had one final chance, but Evidence Makgopa's effort was comfortably gathered by Kovář.

The result leaves both sides on one point from two matches after opening-round defeats. With Mexico and South Korea facing each other later, Czechia and South Africa remain firmly in contention but have little margin for error heading into the final matchday.

Czechia will face Mexico at Mexico City Stadium, while South Africa take on South Korea at Monterrey Stadium. Both matches are scheduled to kick off simultaneously on June 25 at 6:30 AM IST.
