'Entire Family Was Laid Off': Viral Reddit Post Highlights Plight Of IT Employees Amid Job Cuts
Amid a slowdown in the tech industry due to artificial intelligence (AI) driven transformation, millions of workers have been impacted by layoffs in the last few months.

The plight of employees in the IT industry amid recent job cuts often emerges on the internet. Now, a Reddit post has caught the attention of social media users due to an unusual crisis. A Redditor claimed that their entire family, working in the tech sector, has been laid off within a few months.
The user was the first one to lose their job in March, following which their parents were also laid off in the subsequent months.
“My entire family got laid off. I don't even know what to do; I was laid off in March. My dad in May. My mom just lost her job today. We all worked in tech, not high-income FAANG but more middle-class salary companies,” the user’s post read.
FAANG is an acronym used to describe American technology companies: Meta (formerly Facebook), Amazon, Apple, Netflix and Alphabet (formerly Google).
The user recently moved back with their parents to cut costs. Now that they have also lost their jobs, the family feels uncertain about the next course of steps.
The post was shared on the r/layoffs community on Reddit. It has received a lot of attention from other users with similar experiences. Amid a slowdown in the tech industry due to artificial intelligence (AI) driven transformation, millions of workers have been impacted by layoffs.
Sharing a similar experience, another user commented on the post: “My husband and I both lost our tech jobs. He doesn’t seem to be taking it seriously.”
According to one user, who was laid off as a voice engineer, their job may have been outsourced. “I noticed this market behaviour since last year, but now there are more and more layoffs. One thing that I have noticed as well is that my job position is now in India,” the user said.
Another user commented that the only way to avoid outsourcing is to work in areas such as national security. “Need a tech job that can’t be outsourced overseas…like technology that the government deems too important, it has to be done here in the US. Only way it’s saved many jobs in aerospace,” the comment read.
Replying to the post, others shared advice such as applying for unemployment benefits or cutting unnecessary expenses. Many people also appeared to agree with the prevailing sentiment that the tech jobs are likely to see “bad” times ahead.
“The tech field has been collapsing since 2020. Sadly, all you can do is just endlessly apply for jobs, maybe visit places in person and drop off your resume, attend career fairs, consider apprenticeships, and so on. We are really in for some bad times,” a comment read.
