Banks across India will remain shut on Saturday, May 10 as it falls on the second Saturday of the month, a designated bank holiday under the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) guidelines.

According to the RBI’s holiday calendar, banks are closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month, in addition to Sundays and other official public holidays.

The RBI website states, "All scheduled and non-scheduled banks will observe public holidays on second and fourth Saturdays," the central bank stated on its website.

As May 2025 includes five Saturdays, banks will operate on the remaining three Saturdays. They were open on May 3, and will also function on May 17 and May 31. Meanwhile, banks will observe holidays on May 10 and May 24.

Fewer Holidays Mean Busier Banking Days

In May 2025, banks are expected to see increased activity due to the lesser public holidays nationwide. While May includes seven weekday public holidays, most are specific to certain regions or states.

For instance, on May 1, banks remained closed in Maharashtra to mark Maharashtra Day. Similarly, banks in states such as Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Manipur, Kerala, Assam, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Goa, and Bihar were shut for Labour Day.

On May 7, banks in Assam observed a holiday for the Panchayat Election 2025. On May 9, banks in West Bengal were closed to commemorate Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti.

Upcoming Bank Holidays In May

Looking ahead, several region-specific bank holidays are scheduled this month:

  • May 12: Banks will be closed in Tripura, Mizoram, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, West Bengal, New Delhi, Jharkhand, and Himachal Pradesh for Buddha Purnima.

  • May 16: Sikkim will observe Sikkim State Day, leading to a holiday for banks and government offices.

  • May 26: Banks in Tripura will remain shut in observance of the birth anniversary of Kazi Nazrul Islam.

  • May 29: Himachal Pradesh will declare a holiday for Maharana Pratap Jayanti.

With these state-specific holidays and two Saturday closures, customers are encouraged to complete their banking tasks in advance. Those with pending transactions should consult the holiday schedule to avoid inconvenience or last-minute issues.
