The Adani Group has formally entered the nuclear energy sector by incorporating a new arm for Adani Power, which will be known as Adani Atomic Energy Limited (AAEL). This is seen as a key development for the company as it looks to seize the privatisation opportunity in the nuclear energy space.
AAEL's primary business will consist of generating, transmitting, and distributing electric power derived from nuclear and/or atomic energy. It will be a wholly-owned subsidiary of Adani Power, meaning the company will retain 100% stake in AAEL.
The Adani Group's move to form a new subsidiary operating in the nuclear space comes after the parliament passed the SHANTI atomic bill in December 2025.
The SHANTI Act looks to revolutionise India's nuclear energy space by overhauling legacy laws and allowing private players to participate in power generation through atomic energy.
This means players like AAEL will now be able to build and operate nuclear power plants in the country while the government retains the right to make strategic decisions.
This is a significant departure from previous laws that had allowed only Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), a state-owned entity, to operate and build nuclear power plants in the country.
Why Nuclear Energy?
Despite mass hysteria surrounding nuclear energy, the sector is gaining traction worldwide as it is seen as a highly efficient, reliable and low-carbon-based power source that produces nearly zero greenhouse gas emissions during operations.
Nuclear power offers immense energy density that requires minimal land compared to renewables and provides a constant power supply without relying on weather conditions.
While past hysteria associated with nuclear energy cannot be ignored, the global privatisation of nuclear energy has seen drastic improvements in technology, research and safekeeping of nuclear facilities and has led to the creation of ground-breaking inventions, including the Small Modular Reactor.
