Spotify users will be able to curate their music recommendations with the app's new 'Taste Profile' feature, which will facilitate users to go through their music listening data as collected and classified in their Taste Profile and tweak it as per their personal inputs.

This feature, which is currently in Beta, was announced by the music streaming company's co-chief executive officer Gustav Söderström at the South by Southwest conference on March 13.

Spotify curates music to create personalised playlists for its users such as 'Discover Weekly' and 'Made For You' as well as music recommendations such as 'Picked For You' and 'Your Top Mixes'. Through this feature, users will be able to influence the kinds of music that show up on their Home page instead of them being solely algorithmically generated.

The feature will be available in Beta mode to Premium account users based in New Zealand before spreading to the rest of the world.

How It Works

The Taste Profile lists a summary of the listener's music tastes, naming their favourite artists, genres and other finer preferences and leanings. The user can then type their command in the text box that appears below the 'Tell Us More' section right underneath their taste profile.

For example, if a user's Taste Profile stated that they enjoy synthwave and New Wave and are fans of artists such as Daft Punk, the user can type, "I want to listen to more Motörhead" in the 'Tell Us More' section and their music recommendations and playlists will feature more music from the band Motörhead.

It also works the other way aroubd with users requesting to have less music recommended pertaining to a particular genre or artist.

Potential Benefits

Users who use their Spotify account to listen to ambient noise while studying or sleeping may find it inconvenient to see their Home page recommendations suggesting these kinds of audio tracks when they are looking for music to work out to or drive to. Parents and elder siblings may lend their Spotify accounts to younger members of the family but not want the latter's taste in music reflected in the Home page recommendations moving forward.

The 'Taste Profile' feature would help users in such cases tweak their recommendations as per their current requirements and interests.
