Actor Priyanka Chopra Jonas has confirmed that Citadel will return for a second season, even as uncertainty continues to surround the future of the high-profile spy franchise. The actor, who leads the Prime Video series, said the next instalment is definitely happening but admitted she has little clarity on what comes after.
In an interview with Variety, Priyanka said that long-term decisions about the show are not in her hands. “We have Season 2 for sure, but the rest? I have no idea. I don't ask. I go to work, do my job and I leave,” she said, underlining that her focus remains on her role rather than the larger business plans for the franchise.
When it premiered, Citadel was billed as one of the most expensive streaming series ever mounted, with its first season reportedly made on a budget of about $300 million for just six episodes. The show was designed as a global spy universe, with international spin-offs in multiple languages. However, the Italian series Citadel: Diana and the Indian chapter Citadel: Honey Bunny were both discontinued after their first seasons, raising questions about the scale of the original vision.
Despite the mixed response to Season 1 and the cost factor, production on the second season of the main series is currently underway. Priyanka's confirmation signals that the flagship show continues to move forward even as the broader franchise undergoes changes.
The actor also spoke about how she first joined the project through the Russo brothers, who are executive producers on the series. Recalling the moment, she said Joe Russo had sent her the script in a text message. “He just dropped the script on text and said, ‘Check this out.' That's classic Joe style. And here we are four years later,” she said.
Apart from Citadel, Priyanka has a busy lineup of projects. She has been working on the Hollywood film The Bluff and is also set to feature in filmmaker SS Rajamouli's upcoming magnum opus Varanasi.
For now, while the global expansion of Citadel remains uncertain, its second season is firmly on track, with Priyanka Chopra Jonas returning as the face of the series.
