All You Need To Know
Zojila tunnel is being constructed in the challenging Himalayan terrain.
The tunnel is strategically located at an altitude of 11,578 feet.
Over 30 kilometers of tunnel set for completion by 2026 will provide vital all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Leh, via Dras and Kargil.
The tunnel is a crucial part of India's national infrastructure development, specifically the Srinagar-Kargil-Leh National Highway.
It will significantly enhance civilian and military mobility in the region.
This project is not only a strategic infrastructure asset but also represents a significant economic opportunity for the region.
The work on Jammu and Kashmir's Zojila Tunnel is now 70% completed, Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari told Parliament March 27.
Initially, the tunnel was estimated to be constructed for over Rs 12,000 crore, but it will be completed at just around Rs 5,500 crore.
The project includes a Smart Tunnel or SCADA system, which has been constructed using the New Austrian Tunneling Method
The tunnel is equipped with facilities like CCTV, radio control, uninterrupted power supply, and ventilation.
