(Bloomberg) -- An American journalist and filmmaker was shot and killed Sunday covering the war in Ukraine in what may be the first foreign journalist killed in the conflict, according to multiple media and government reports.
Brent Renaud, 50, an award-winning filmmaker who had covered the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, was shot in Irpin, north of the capital of Kyiv. Another journalist with Renaud was reportedly injured in the shooting in a suburb of Kyiv that has been under Russian attack. The two were traveling in a car that was fired on by Russian troops, the Kyiv police said on their Facebook page.
Renaud had been a regular contributor to the New York Times. Clifford Levy, deputy managing editor at the Times, tweeted that Renaud last worked for the newspaper in 2015.
The news that a U.S. journalist in Ukraine was killed by Russians is “obviously shocking and horrifying,” Biden's national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, said on CBS's “Face the Nation” on Sunday. Sullivan said he's asking questions about how it happened.
Earlier this month Sky News correspondent Stuart Ramsay was shot in the lower back after his car was ambushed as he and other colleagues were driving back to Kyiv. Ramsay has since returned to the U.K.
