An Indian tourist has died while three others remain hospitalised after a mysterious incident at a beachside cafe in Thailand's Phuket, according to the Embassy of India in Thailand.

The incident took place in the Kamala Beach area of Kathu district in Phuket on May 9, local media reports said. The circumstances leading to the tourists losing consciousness remain unclear and are currently under investigation by Thai authorities.

In a statement posted on X on Tuesday, the Embassy of India in Thailand said it was closely monitoring the case involving four Indian nationals who fell unconscious and were subsequently admitted to hospital.

“Our deepest condolences for the death of one young Indian tourist among them,” the embassy said.

“The Embassy officials are in contact with the family of the deceased to extend all support in this hour of grief. We remain in contact with the relevant Thai authorities who are looking into the incident, and also following the health situation of the others,” it added.

According to a report by the Bangkok Post, five Indian nationals arrived together at a cafe in Phuket at around 11 pm on Friday night. Security staff at the establishment reportedly told investigators that four members of the group lost consciousness one after another at around 1.54 am and were rushed to hospital.

Police were informed at around 2 pm on Saturday that one of the tourists had died, while the remaining three were reported to be in stable condition, the report added.

Thai authorities have not yet disclosed the exact cause behind the incident.
