Tamil Nadu politics is undergoing a massive reset. Counting trends on Monday morning suggest the state is on the brink of dismantling a political duopoly that has held firm for nearly six decades.
By 10:10 am, actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay's Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) had pulled ahead, leading in 83 constituencies. The state's traditional powerhouses are struggling to keep pace with the debutant party; the AIADMK+ is currently leading in 74 seats, while the incumbent DMK+ has slipped to a distant third, holding leads in just 56 seats.
If these margins hold, Tamil Nadu will crown a ruling party outside the DMK and AIADMK fold for the first time in 59 years.
The End of the Dravidian Duopoly?
You have to rewind to 1967 to find a comparable political upset in the state. That year, C.N. Annadurai led the DMK to a historic victory over the Indian National Congress, permanently altering Tamil Nadu's trajectory. Since then, power at Fort St George has merely bounced back and forth between the DMK and the AIADMK. Over the decades, dozens of third-front alternatives and national parties have tried to break into this fortress, only to end up as marginal players.
This morning's initial numbers point to a drastic realignment in voter loyalties.

The TVK Phenomenon
Vijay's jump from cinema to the political centre stage has clearly struck a chord with an electorate looking for a viable alternative. Beyond the obvious pull of his stardom, the early data suggests TVK has managed to sweep up first-time voters and channel a deep anti-incumbency wave against the established Dravidian majors.
Counting is still underway, and the Election Commission's dashboard continues to update. Yet, the writing on the wall is clear: the 59-year fortress of the traditional heavyweights has been decisively breached, and Tamil Nadu has a new favourite.
