Schools Shut, Lal Chowk Sealed, Curbs Announced In Kashmir Amid Protests Over Khamenei's Death

Restrictions were imposed in several parts of the Kashmir Valley following protests over the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, India Today reported on Monday.

In Srinagar, the Lal Chowk area was sealed, and security forces restricted access to the Ghanta Ghar, commonly known as the Clock Tower. Authorities said the step was taken as part of security arrangements amid the prevailing situation.

Officials have ordered all schools and educational institutions across the Kashmir Valley to remain closed for two days (March 2 and March 3) as a precautionary measure.

The University of Kashmir also postponed its ongoing examinations, citing the situation.

In the meantime, mobile internet speeds were also restricted across the Valley.

Officials cited by India Today stated that the internet restriction was placed as a preventive step to maintain calm, saying that videos circulating from Iran and visuals of protests were further intensifying the already tense atmosphere.

Security was heightened in several sensitive areas, and the movement of people was being closely monitored to maintain law and order.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah earlier said that people mourning the killing should be allowed to grieve peacefully.

“It is important that people in Jammu and Kashmir who are mourning are allowed to do so peacefully. The police and civil administration must show restraint and avoid the use of force or unnecessary restrictive measures,” the report quoted him as saying.
