Mumbai Ferry Accident: Death Toll Rises To 13; Rs 5 Lakh Ex-Gratia Announced

Thirteen people have died, and 101 others were rescued after an Indian Navy speedboat collided with a ferry off the Mumbai coast on Wednesday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said. He also announced Rs 5 lakhs ex gratia from the CM relief fund.

The victims include 10 civilians and three Navy personnel, Fadnavis said, as he briefed reporters in Nagpur. The ferry, identified as 'Neelkamal', capsized at around 3:55 p.m.

It was en route to the Elephanta Islands, a popular tourist spot near Mumbai, when it was struck by the speedboat, Fadnavis said.

The Indian Navy and Coast Guard launched a massive rescue operation, with 11 naval crafts, one coast guard boat, three marine police crafts and four helicopters Fadnavis added.

Personnel from police, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority and fishermen in the area were also involved in the rescue work. Those rescued were transferred to the nearest hospitals in the vicinity.

Fadnavis assured that the whole incident would be investigated by the police and the Navy.
