Monsoon is likely to enter Kerala by May 26 this year, indicating an early onset of the season compared to its usual arrival date, according to India Meterological Department (IMD).
The forecast mentions a model error of four days, meaning that monsoon could reach Kerala anytime between May 22 to May 30. In a release issued on Friday, May 15, IMD said, "This year, the southwest monsoon is likely to set in over Kerala on 26th May with a model error of ± 4 days."
Monsoon typically arrives in Kerala around June 1, which then moves northwards covering the rest of the country. This marks the beginning of the monsoon season in the country. The season beings in June and ends by September. Last year, the onset of monsoon happened on May 24, the weather forecasting agency said.
