The Indian Navy will commission its latest stealth frigate, Taragiri (F41) this week, marking a new chapter in India's push for self-reliance. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will preside over the ceremony in Visakhapatnam on April 3, during which the indigenously built frigate will formally join the frontline fleet.

“The Daring Eagle: A New Chapter in Aatmanirbharta Begins… Rise Above. Indian Navy's indigenously built stealth frigate, Taragiri will be commissioned on April 3,” the Navy posted on X on Tuesday.

According to the government, Taragiri, the fourth ship in the Project 17A class, is a 6,670-tonne platform built with indigenous technology. Project 17A frigates are versatile multi-mission platforms, designed to address current and future challenges in the maritime domain.

“Beyond its role as a premier hunter of the seas, Taragiri is built for the complexities of modern diplomacy and humanitarian crises. Its flexible mission profile makes it ideal for everything from high-intensity combat to Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR),” the Defence Ministry stated in a press release.

Features Of Taragiri (F41)

Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd., Taragiri (F41) comes with major advancements compared to earlier designs. Its sleek hull and reduced radar cross-section allow it to operate with enhanced stealth capabilities. The indigenous content in this ship is at over 75% and involves more than 200 MSMEs, reflecting the “maturity of a domestic industrial ecosystem,” the ministry said.

Taragiri is powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, giving it high speed and long endurance for maritime operations.

“The ship's weapon suite is world-class, featuring supersonic Surface-to-Surface Missiles, Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missiles, and a specialised Anti-Submarine Warfare suite,” the statement read. A state-of-the-art Combat Management System integrates all these systems, allowing the crew to detect, track, and engage targets efficiently.

The creation of Taragiri has positively supported the government's self-reliance efforts and resulted in the creation of thousands of jobs, the ministry said. A day ago, the Indian Navy received Dunagiri, an indigenous Project 17A stealth frigate, from Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers. It was the fifth Project 17A ship inducted in the past 16 months.
