Banks across India will remain closed for one day this week due to multiple regional and national observances. On May 1, a series of events including Maharashtra Day and May Day will result in a bank holiday in many states and union territories. This will lead to a pause in banking services, operations of schools, colleges, and government institutions and post offices. During the holiday, physical bank branches will remain closed in the affected states but online services and ATMs will continue to be available.

The holiday also signals the beginning of May, as the month of April comes to an end. During the month, banks will remain closed for a total of 12 days, including the weekends.

Bank Holiday On May 1

According to the holiday calendar shared by the Reserve Bank of India, banks everywhere except in Gujarat, Odisha, Chandigarh, Sikkim, Rajasthan, Nagaland and Meghalaya, will remain closed on May 1.

The holiday marks Maharashtra Day, Buddha Pournima, May Day (Labour Day), and the birth anniversary of Pandit Raghunath Murmu, depending on the state.

Customers are advised to plan their banking needs in advance to avoid any inconvenience. To be clear, May 1 is a holiday which falls on a Friday, but May 2 will be a working day for the banks in India. This is because the RBI mandates the closure of banks only on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month.
