Andhra Pradesh: Prakasam Bus Fire Claims 13 Lives, PM Modi Sanctions Rs 2 Lakh Compensation

A private bus collided with a tipper truck, leading to 13 fatalities and 20 injuries. Following the impact, the bus erupted in flames and was entirely consumed by fire.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his condolences on Thursday regarding the tragic vehicular accident in Prakasam district, Andhra Pradesh, and announced an ex-gratia sum of Rs 2 lakh for the families of each victim and Rs 50,000 for each individual injured.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the PMO said  “The mishap in Prakasam district, Andhra Pradesh, is tragic. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000.”

The collision transpired near slab quarries when a private bus collided with a tipper truck, leading to 13 fatalities and 20 injuries. Following the impact, the bus erupted in flames and was entirely consumed by fire. The private bus, operated by Harikrishna Travels, was en-route from Nirmal in Telangana to Nellore.

"Nearly eight people were burnt alive, and about 18 injured persons have been rescued so far and shifted to hospital. Efforts are on to gather complete details of the incident,” stated Markapuram Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Nagaraju to PTI.

The mishap took place around 6:00 am when the coach, owned by Harikrishna Travels, was en route from Nirmal in Telangana to Nellore. Following the impact, the bus ignited, and numerous passengers were engulfed in flames, officials informed NDTV.

Earlier that day, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu engaged with officials about the medical care extended to the injured. District police informed him that approximately 20 casualties had been admitted to various hospitals. He directed officials to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the accident's causes and provide a detailed account.

Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan conveyed his condolances after the tragic incident, stating, "I am deeply shocked to learn that 13 people were burned alive in a road accident that occurred near Rayavaram in Markapuram district. I have obtained details from the district administration regarding the causes of the accident. I have clearly instructed that better medical treatment be provided to the injured."
