Former British Airways chief William Walsh has been appointed the CEO of IndiGo following the sudden exit of Pieter Elbers earlier this month.
Walsh, popularly known as Willie, is currently serving as Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). His tenure at IATA will end on July 31, and he is expected to join IndiGo by August 3, the airline said.
Who Is William Walsh?
William “Willie” Walsh was born on October 25, 1961, in Dublin in Ireland.
He began his career in aviation as a cadet pilot with Aer Lingus in 1979. He later became a Boeing 737 captain while earning a master's degree in business administration from Trinity College Dublin.
Walsh moved into management in the late 1990s and became Chief Operating Officer of Aer Lingus in 2000. In 2001, he was appointed CEO.
In 2005, Walsh took over as CEO of British Airways. He went on to lead the merger of British Airways and Iberia in 2011, creating International Airlines Group (IAG), where he served as CEO until September 2020.
Walsh was appointed Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in April 2021. He was its eighth chief. During his tenure, he focused on the aviation sector's recovery from COVID-19 and pushed for the industry's net-zero carbon emissions target by 2050.
He also served on the IATA Board of Governors from 2005 to 2018, including a term as Chair.
As IndiGo CEO, Walsh will lead overall operations and strategy.
IndiGo operates more than 2,200 daily flights, connecting 95 domestic and over 40 international destinations. It has become a major player in India's aviation boom, known for its low fares and strong on-time performance.
The appointment comes at a key time for IndiGo, which continues to lead India's aviation market. The airline holds a market share of nearly 64% and had a fleet of around 440 aircraft as of December-end.
