The Supreme Court on Tuesday compared the bitter Rs 30,000-crore Kapur family inheritance dispute to the Indian epic Mahabharat, as fresh allegations and counter-allegations intensified the legal battle surrounding the estate of late businessman Sunjay Kapur.

Hearing an urgent plea filed by Sunjay Kapur's mother, Rani Kapur, Justice JB Pardiwala remarked that the scale of the family feud was so vast that “Mahabharat will look very small,” while agreeing to hear the matter on May 14.

Rani Kapur, 80, approached the apex court seeking to halt a May 18 board meeting of Raghuvanshi Investments Private Limited (RIPL), which controls a substantial portion of the disputed assets. She alleged the meeting was a “fraudulent attempt” to bypass the ongoing court-directed mediation process.

She also sought directions restraining Priya Kapur, Sunjay Kapur's third wife, from interfering in the functioning of the family trust until mediation concludes.

The inheritance battle has triggered multiple legal proceedings involving family trusts, company holdings linked to Sona Comstar, and the late businessman's will. Former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud has been appointed mediator in the dispute.

Separate litigation also continues over Sunjay Kapur's will, with Karisma Kapoor's children, Kiaan and Samaira Kapoor, accusing Priya Kapur of forgery. Another parallel case involving Priya Kapur and Mandhira Kapur Smith over alleged defamatory remarks has further deepened the high-profile family rift.
