Auto Sales In April 2023: M&M's Passenger Vehicle Sales Jump, Tractor Sales Decline

Indian automakers are announcing their April sales figures today. Analysts expect the wholesale sales to be higher but retail sales may get impacted due to advanced purchases of vehicles in March amid anticipation of price hikes due to new emission norms in April.

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.'s passenger vehicle sales jumped 54% to 34,698 units in April.

However, the tractor dispatches fell 11% to 36,405 units in the month due to preponement of high demand generating festivals of Navratri and Gudi Padwa in March this year compared to April last year, the company said.

Sales Snapshots (YoY):

  • Sales of three wheelers grew 85% to 5,552 units.

  • Tractor sales fell 11% to 36,405 units.

  • Sales of medium capacity light commercial vehicle rose 14% to 15,665 units.

Ashok Leyland's total dispatches to dealerships registered a growth of 10% to 12,974 units in April.

Sales Snapshots (YoY):

  • Medium and heavy truck sales fell 4% to 6,831 units.

  • Bus sales rose 82% to 1,102 units.

  • Light commercial vehicle sales jumped 21% to 5,041 units.

Bajaj Auto Ltd.'s total two-wheeler sales rose 2% to 2.88 lakh units in April even as the exports remained weak with 44% fall in dispatches to 1.06 lakh units.

Sales Highlights (YoY):

  • Total sales rose 7% to 3.31 lakh units.

  • Domestic two-wheeler sales grew 95% to 1.82 lakh units.

  • Commercial vehicle sales rose 49% to 43,293 units.

TVS Motor Co. registered a sales growth of 4% at 30.62 lakh units in April 2023. TVS iQube Electric recorded a sales milestone of 1,00,000 units. Motorcycle registered sales growth of 10% to 152,365 units in April 2023.

Sales Snapshots (YoY):

  • Two-wheeler dispatches grew 5% to 2.95 lakh units.

  • Domestic two-wheeler sales jumped 29% to 2.33 lakh units.

  • Total exports fell 37% to 71,663 units.

Hero MotoCorp's exports declined 51% in April, 2023 as compared to the same month in the previous year. Total dispatches to dealerships fall 5% to 3.96 lakh units. In April, the company’s emerging mobility brand, VIDA became the official electric-mobility partner of Lucknow Super Giants for IPL.

Sales Snapshots (YoY):

  • Motorcycle sales dropped 6% to 3.68 lakh units.

  • Scooter sales jumped 5% to 27,277 units.

  • Domestic sales fell 3% to 3.86 lakh units.

  • Exports declined 51% to 9,923 units

Eicher Motors Ltd.'s total motorcycle sales rose 19% year-on-year to 73,136 units despite weakness in the overseas markets.

Sales Snapshots (YoY):

  • Sales of models with engine capacity up to 350cc rose 26% to 64,728 units.

  • Sales of models with engine capacity exceeding 350cc fell 21% to 8,408 units.

  • Exports halved to 4,255 units.

Eicher Motors Ltd.'s arm VE Commercial Vehicles Ltd.'s dispatches to dealerships rose 19% to 6,567 units in April.

Sales Highlights (YoY):

  • Domestic sales rose 29% to 6,142 units.

  • Exports fell 60.5% to 257 units.

Tata Motors Ltd.'s total sales fell 4% year-on-year to 68,514 units in April as dispatches in the commercial vehicle category fell across categories.

Tata Motors April Sales (YoY):

  • Total commercial vehicle sales fall 27% to 22,492 units.

  • Heavy commercial vehicle dispatches fell 6% to 6,984 units.

  • Sales in intermediate, light and medium commercial vehicle segment fell 62% to 2,148 units.

  • Passenger vehicle sales rose 13% to 47,107 units.

  • Electric car sales more than doubled to 6,516 units.

Hyundai Motor India Ltd.'s dispatches to dealerships rose 3.5% to 58,201 units in April as fall in exports offset the double-digit growth in domestic sales.

Hyundai Motor India Sales Highlights (YoY):

  • Domestic sales rose 13% to 49,701 units.

  • Exports fell 30.3% to 8,500 units.

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.'s dispatches to dealerships rose 6.5% to 1.61 lakh units in April as the company's shipments in the hatchback segment rose nearly 17%.

The growth was limited by a fall in exports and lower production due to shortage of semiconductors.

Maruti Suzuki April Sales (YoY):

  • Domestic sales rose 8.6% to 1.44 lakh units.

  • Sales in mini and compact segment grew 16.7% to 89,045 units.

  • Utility vehicle sales rose 8.3% to 36,754 units.

  • Exports fell 7.8% to 16,971 units.

Kia India's dispatches to dealerships rose 22% year-on-year to 23,216 units in April as its flagship SUVs Seltos and Sonet remained in high demand. For the January-April period, the company's sales were 24% higher.

Sonet was the the best-selling product in April with 9,744 units sold, while Seltos was at the second spot with sales of 7,213 units.

Toyota Kirloskar's wholesale sales fell 6% year-on-year to 14,162 units in April as a maintenance shutdown for upkeep of machinery and equipment limited the production.

The company said it continues to see high demand and enquiries for its products.

Escorts Kubota Ltd.'s dispatches to dealerships fell 9.1% year-on-year to 7,565 units in April.

The preponement of Navratri festive season this time to March 2023 as against April last year, combined with unseasonal rains impacted sales for the month, the tractor maker said.

Escorts Kubota April Sales Highlights (YoY):

  • Domestic sales fell 5.5% to 7,252 units.

  • Exports fell 52% to 313 units.

"Going forward, due to positive macro-economic factors on account of good rabi harvest, improved crop prices and adequate water reservoir levels, we expect demand momentum to improve across geographies, for the quarter," the company said.
