Duty-Free Shopping Goes Online: Adani Airports, MakeMyTrip Partner To Launch Pre-Booking Option

Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL) and MakeMyTrip have launched an online duty‑free pre‑booking facility for international travellers, allowing passengers to browse and reserve products before arriving at or departing from select Indian airports.

Under the arrangement, duty‑free catalogues will be accessible through MakeMyTrip's app and mobile website. International passengers can pre‑book items for pick‑up at Adani‑managed airports, covering both departure and arrival journeys. The initiative shifts duty‑free purchases to the trip‑planning stage rather than relying on in‑terminal shopping.

The service offers access to more than 14,000 products across over 100 brands and more than 10 categories, including liquor, tobacco, fragrances, accessories and electronics. Online‑exclusive prices and offers are available, which users can review prior to travel.

AAHL currently operates duty‑free outlets at six airports—Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Mangaluru, Jaipur and Thiruvananthapuram—where passengers can collect their pre‑booked purchases. The companies said the move is intended to reduce time spent browsing and queuing at airport retail areas, particularly during peak travel periods.

For MakeMyTrip, the tie‑up adds duty‑free shopping to its growing list of ancillary travel services integrated into flight bookings, as overseas travel demand from India continues to rise. Airport operators, meanwhile, are increasingly focused on non‑aeronautical revenue streams such as retail, food and duty‑free to improve yields per passenger.

The pre‑booking model is also expected to help duty‑free operators manage inventory and demand more efficiently by offering better visibility into purchase intent ahead of passenger arrival.

The service is currently available only to eligible international travellers, with items to be collected at designated duty‑free counters within Adani‑operated airports. Both companies indicated that additional services and features linked to the online duty‑free offering will be rolled out in phases.
