What Is La Nina? Could It Follow A Strong El Nino And Change Global Weather In 2027?

Scientists are watching whether the strong El Nino will give way to La Nina in 2027, a possible shift that could reshape global rainfall, temperatures and extreme weather patterns.

Global weather patterns could face another shift in 2027 as scientists monitor the possibility of La Niña emerging after the ongoing strong El Niño. While the current warming phase is expected to influence weather conditions until February 2027, a subsequent reversal in Pacific Ocean temperatures could bring a fresh set of climate challenges.

The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) has warned that the current El Niño has yet to reach its peak, with its effects likely to persist into early 2027. However, attention is also turning to what could follow once the phenomenon begins to weaken.

In some instances, El Niño gives way to La Niña, a transition that can significantly alter rainfall, temperature and storm patterns across the world. The shift, however, is not automatic, and scientists have not yet established that La Niña will emerge in 2027.

What Are El Niño And La Niña?

El Niño and La Niña are opposite phases of a naturally occurring climate pattern known as the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which typically develops every two to seven years, according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

El Niño, Spanish for 'little boy', refers to the warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. La Niña, meaning 'little girl', represents the cooling phase of the same region.

Although both phenomena originate in the Pacific, their influence extends far beyond the ocean, affecting rainfall, temperatures and extreme weather events across continents.

How Do El Niño And La Niña Influence Global Weather?

During El Niño, the easterly trade winds weaken or occasionally reverse, allowing warmer surface waters to move towards the central and eastern Pacific. This disrupts normal atmospheric circulation and can trigger changes in rainfall and temperature patterns worldwide.

La Niña produces broadly opposite conditions. Stronger-than-usual trade winds push warm surface water towards the western Pacific, near Asia and Australia, while colder, nutrient-rich water rises along the coast of South America.

These changes can influence monsoon patterns, drought conditions, tropical cyclones and temperature trends in different parts of the world.

Can La Niña Follow A Strong El Niño In 2027?

Although El Niño and La Niña frequently alternate, the ENSO cycle does not follow a fixed timetable. The climate system can also experience consecutive episodes of the same phase.

According to WMO forecasts, a weak La Niña that emerged in late 2025 weakened and faded in early 2026, before conditions shifted towards El Niño by mid-year.

In an experimental forecast released in October 2026, NOAA meteorologist Nathaniel Johnson indicated that the ongoing El Niño could move towards ENSO-neutral conditions during the spring or early summer of 2027.

However, uncertainty increases with longer-range forecasts. The possibility of La Niña emerging after the current El Niño remains open, but it is not yet a confirmed prediction. For now, scientists will closely monitor Pacific Ocean temperatures and atmospheric conditions to determine whether the world is heading towards another major climate shift in 2027.
