Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday announced the elevation of India-Italy ties to a “Special Strategic Partnership” during his visit to Rome, describing the move as a major milestone in the relationship between the two countries.

Addressing a joint press conference alongside Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, PM Modi said the growing cooperation between New Delhi and Rome now requires a more “practical and futuristic framework” to shape future collaboration across trade, technology, manufacturing, innovation and culture.

He remarked that when two ancient civilisations come together, discussions transcend formal agendas and are viewed through the depth of history, shared values and future aspirations.

The Prime Minister said the India-Italy Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029 would guide bilateral cooperation in a time-bound manner.

He noted that trade between the two countries is rapidly moving towards the 20 billion euro mark and highlighted the contribution of more than 800 Italian companies to India's growth story.

PM Modi also underlined the complementary strengths of the two economies, saying Italy is globally known for design and precision, while India is recognised for its skilled talent and affordable innovation.

“Design in Italy and India, develop in India and Italy, and deliver for the world,” he said, outlining a new vision for industrial collaboration between the two nations.
