Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni outlined an expanded roadmap for bilateral cooperation on Wednesday, publishing a joint op-ed across several news platforms that covered trade, technology, energy, space, and security.
The op-ed was anchored by the idea of an emerging "Indo-Mediterranean" corridor linking the Indian Ocean to Europe.
Modi announced the piece on X, writing: "Penned an op-ed with PM Meloni on how India-Italy ties have reached a decisive stage. Ours is a Special Strategic Partnership driven by innovation, shared democratic values and a common vision for the future."

A Partnership at a 'Decisive Stage'
"The relationship between India and Italy has now reached a decisive stage. In recent years, our ties have expanded with unprecedented momentum, evolving from a cordial friendship into a special strategic partnership grounded in the values of freedom and democracy, and a common vision for the future," Modi and Meloni wrote in the op-ed titled "A Strategic Partnership for the Indo-Mediterranean".
The two leaders argued that India and Italy, positioned at the heart of the Indo-Pacific and Mediterranean respectively, can no longer be viewed as operating in separate spheres. "We are witnessing the emergence of what might be termed the Indo-Mediterranean — an important corridor for trade, technology, energy, data and ideas tying the Indian Ocean to Europe," they said.
Trade, Tech and the €20 Billion Target
On economic cooperation, the leaders set an ambitious benchmark — reaching and exceeding €20 billion in bilateral trade by 2029, with the EU-India Free Trade Agreement providing a framework. Focus sectors include defence and aerospace, clean technologies, pharmaceuticals, automotive components, textiles, and agri-food.
"We aim to forge a powerful synergy between Italian design, manufacturing excellence, and world-class supercomputers — and India's rapid economic growth, engineering talent, and innovation ecosystem with over 100 unicorns and 200,000 start-ups," the op-ed said.

AI, Space and Clean Energy
The two leaders stressed that AI must remain human-centred. "Our approach combines India's digital scale with Italy's ethical and industrial expertise, ensuring technology serves human dignity," they wrote — a position they said forms the core of Italy's G7 Presidency and the outcomes of the AI Impact Summit 2026 held in New Delhi.
Cooperation in space, renewable energy, hydrogen technologies, smart grids, and critical maritime security also featured, alongside joint commitments to the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure.
The leaders also reaffirmed support for the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), first announced at the G20 Summit in New Delhi in September 2023, as a key instrument connecting the two regions through transport, digital networks, and resilient supply chains.
