Luigi Mangione has pleaded guilty to federal charges related to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, admitting in a Manhattan court that he shot the executive dead in New York in December 2024, according to reports.
Mangione, 28, pleaded guilty on Friday to two federal charges: interstate stalking resulting in death and stalking resulting in death involving the use of interstate facilities.
During the hearing, Mangione said he had researched UnitedHealthcare's annual investor conference and contacted the company while posing as an investor to gather information that helped him locate and target Thompson.
"I shot Mr Thompson in Manhattan," Mangione told the judge, acknowledging that the shooting was illegal.
Thompson, 50, was the chief executive of UnitedHealthcare, the largest US health insurer. He was shot on a New York City street in December 2024, setting off a five-day manhunt that ended with Mangione's arrest at a McDonald's restaurant in Pennsylvania.
Mangione's federal case is separate from the state prosecution he faces in New York.
He continues to face state charges including second-degree murder and firearm-related offences.
He had previously pleaded not guilty to those charges and has not changed that plea. The state case is scheduled to go to trial next month.
The federal guilty plea marks a major development in the prosecution, but it does not resolve the separate New York case.
The outcome of the state proceedings will determine Mangione's criminal liability under state law and could have significant consequences for the penalties he faces over Thompson's killing.
