At a White House state dinner, Britain's monarch King Charles III delivered a witty response to remarks by US President Donald Trump, drawing laughter during an otherwise formal evening.
Speaking during the traditional exchange of toasts, King Charles appeared to reference Trump's earlier comments suggesting that without US intervention, parts of Europe might have been speaking German following World War II.
Offering a humorous counterpoint rooted in history, the King said, “You recently commented, Mr President, that if it were not for the United States, European countries would be speaking German. Dare I say that, if it wasn't for us, you'd be speaking French.”
The quip, delivered in a light-hearted tone, was met with amusement from guests and quickly became a talking point from the evening.
The remark alluded to early North American history, when British and French powers vied for control of the continent long before American independence.

While playful, it underscored the longstanding historical ties and rivalries that have shaped relations between the US, the UK and Europe.
The dinner, part of an ongoing state visit, also saw both leaders highlight shared values and enduring alliances, with proceedings concluding on a cordial note.
