The United States' Federal Bureau of Investigation has warned smartphone users about several risky mobile apps. This warning has been made with a focus on apps made by foreign companies, especially those based in China.

According to a Forbes report, the US officials have highlighted that many of these apps may collect sensitive user data. This includes location, contacts and personal messages. The FBI urged people to think carefully before downloading such apps. They also advised checking app permissions and developer details before sharing any key personal details. These warnings are meant for both Android and iOS devices.

“As of early 2026, many of the most downloaded and top-grossing apps in the United States are developed and maintained by foreign companies, particularly those based in China,” the announcement noted, highlighting “data security risks associated with foreign-developed mobile applications (apps)...”

The Forbes report said that the warning is tied to China's strict security laws. These laws can force companies to share user data with the government. According to the controversial Article 7, states that all citizens and organisations must support intelligence work. This also raised concerns surrounding popular social media platform TikTok, as officials feared sensitive user data could be accessed or misused by authorities.

Additionally, Article 14 of the law states that “National intelligence work institutions lawfully carrying out intelligence efforts may request that relevant organs, organisations, and citizens provide necessary support, assistance, and cooperation,” triggering concerns about the collection of sensitive user data. These two clauses taken together are often used to define the risks.

The FBI has not named any specific apps, but shared safety guidelines for users. These could apply to some of the top used apps such as CapCut, Temu, SHEIN, and Lemon8, among others.

According to Forbes, the risk is higher on Android due to sideloading, where apps are installed outside official stores. However, iPhone users are also at risk. Officials warn that even trusted platforms can host apps that collect sensitive data without clear notice.
