WhatsApp has introduced Group Message History, a new feature designed to make joining group chats smoother and more seamless. This update addresses one of the messaging platform's most frequently requested improvements by allowing group admins and members to share recent messages with newly added participants. This can help them quickly understand the context of ongoing discussions without disrupting the conversation flow.
WhatsApp's Group Message History Feature: How It Works
When a new person is added to a WhatsApp group, users now see an option to send a portion of the recent message history — ranging from 25 to a maximum of 100 messages. This provides newcomers with only the most relevant and up-to-date information, reducing confusion and eliminating the need for manual workarounds such as taking screenshots or forwarding individual messages repeatedly.

The feature prioritises privacy and control. Sharing message history is not automatic; it requires an action from a group member or admin. Group administrators have the ability to disable this option entirely for their groups if preferred, though admins themselves can always choose to share history when adding someone. All shared messages remain fully end-to-end encrypted, according to WhatsApp, ensuring that only intended recipients can access the content.
For added transparency, whenever message history is sent to a new member, every participant in the group receives a notification. These shared messages are clearly marked as distinct from regular chat content, complete with visible timestamps and sender details, so everyone knows what has been provided for context.
The rollout of Group Message History feature began gradually on Feb. 19-20 and is expected to become available to more users worldwide on both Android and iOS in the coming days or weeks. Users are encouraged to update their app to the latest version to access the feature as it becomes available.
