In a move to tackle the spread of misinformation, Perplexity AI has rolled out a new WhatsApp-based tool to verify forwarded messages in real time. The announcement was made by CEO Aravind Srinivas through a post on X (formerly Twitter), generating widespread interest and overwhelming user engagement.
Announcing this feature, Srinivas wrote, "You can now forward any WhatsApp message to Perplexity: +1 (833) 436-3285 and get it fact checked instantly. This is super useful when WhatsApp groups are filled with a ton of forwarded messages which could be misleading. The tool instantly became popular, and the initial response was more intense than the company may have expected. Within hours of launch, usage soared to such levels that Perplexity was forced to suspend the service temporarily to manage the load.
In another post a few hours later, Srinivas said, “Perplexity's WhatsApp bot has seen unprecedented demand- volume is far beyond anything we anticipated. We've had to take it down temporarily. Working to bring it back as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience. Will be back with an update.”
