Apple is said to be considering the idea of applying Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide (LTPO) OLED display to iPhone 19e, which is expected to come out in the first half of 2028. If all goes as planned, this would bring 120Hz ProMotion technology to the Cupertino-based tech giant's most affordable iPhone for the first time.
If Apple applies LTPO TFTs to the iPhone e series, then LTPO will be used across the entire lineup, according to ZDNet Korea. The report states that the fourth-generation model in the entry-level iPhone e-series could adopt an LTPO panel. This will make the display technically capable of dynamically adjusting the refresh rate between 1Hz and 120Hz.
Notably, this is the same panel technology that is currently made available in the iPhone 17 lineup and the iPhone Air.
The iPhone 17e, which came out recently, features a 60Hz low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) TFT panel.
ZDNet Korea has claimed that Apple is planning to use the same technology for iPhone 18e, scheduled to come out next year. Customers can find 120Hz screens on the competing Android phones in a similar price range.
The major shift towards LTPO OLED display is said to depend in part on the company's development of a next-generation "LTPO+" display technology. This not only uses less battery power, but also incorporates oxide semiconductors in both switching and drive transistors.
For now, Apple is said to be planning to reserve LTPO+ for the higher-end models that will come out in 2028. Among these are the new versions of the iPhone Air as well as the highly anticipated foldable iPhone, which might free up standard LTPO panels for the rest of the lineup.
However, the report noted that there might be a delay in LPTO panels for iPhone 19e if the new technology is not ready in time. Notably, Apple adopted the LPTO+, also called LPTO3, for the first time in 2024, with the Apple Watch Series. The panels were supplied by LG Display.
This reportedly provided the company confidence in scaling the technology to iPhone-sized displays. Apple has often tested new display technologies in the Apple Watch before introducing them to the iPhone.
Earlier, another report suggested that Apple was looking forward to adopting the new display for at least one of its models in its 2027 iPhone lineup.

However, ZDNet Korea reported that the company has now moved away from the idea, since the technology was not ready for mass production.
